There has been a lot of discussion regarding wood security and wood screen doors from the
Columbia Manufacturing Corporation. This company makes a large variety of wood doors that are available from home improvement stores as well as their own website. The doors can easily be hung on an existing doorframe, even by those who have limited knowledge of home improvement. Thats one of the many reasons why this company and their variety of wood doors are so popular and well known.
Look at the Laredo wood screen door. This is quite possibly the most basic of all the doors the company offers because there is very little to it. The door has a small wood border surrounding a removable wire screen. The screen can be replaced or removed for those that decide against a screen door. The wood border measures 3 inches on the bottom and one inch along the sides and top. One wood slat across the middle acts as a push bar for the door and some customers have opted not to use the additional hardware available. Though it comes only in an untreated and natural finish, it is available in two of the larger door sizes: 32 and 36 inches.
The Yorktown wood security screen door is an anomaly in the lineup of doors from
Columbia. This door doesnt come untreated or in a natural finish like their
others, but rather has a dark color. This is due to the rich cherry stain applied to the door before shipping. The company applies the stain as well as a sealant to protect against moisture and water damage. The door cannot be purchased in any other shade or as a natural wood; it must be purchased with the stain already in place. Two vertical wood tubes of 1/2 and three horizontal tubes of the same size create a crisscross pattern on the front of the door. These pieces are glued into the border and top of the door as well as glued into a piece on the bottom of the door. This piece measures twelve inches high and adds to the decoration of the door. The door itself is only available in the 36 wide size.
The Lincoln wood security door from
Columbia is very similar to the Four Square door from the same company. A one inch piece of wood runs across the middle of the door, with another piece of one inch wood intersecting it at the middle. A third piece crosses right at the middle of this vertical piece to create four small blocks on the bottom of the door. These blocks provide extra space for air to sneak through the attached screen behind the door. The screen is attached carefully to the back of the door, but can easily be removed for those customers that want a stronger screen. The Lincoln comes in an unfinished wood and customers need to apply the stain or color before installing it.
Columbia makes the door in three different widths: 30, 32 and 36 with a height of 80 inches.
Also from
Columbia is the Charleston wood security door. The Charleston comes only in the natural color option, but is available in three sizes: 30, 32 and 36 inches. A one inch piece of wood across the middle of the door serves as a push bar and also takes some of the pressure off the attached wire mesh screen. Two vertical wood bars of one inch wide attach to the push bar and create a slight visual design to this otherwise plain wood security screen door.
The Monterey wood security door combines high class elegance with an old fashioned design. Though the door looks quite heavy, this is only because of the deep stain used and not an indication of its actual weight. Many of the
Columbia doors come untreated and in a natural shade, but this one is stained in a deep cherry color. Customers cannot buy it untreated, but most purchase it with this stain intact. The Monterey has an extremely unusual shape and design, with two large cut outs on the inside of the door to create two rounded shapes. Inside the cut out is a wood push bar for additional stability. This wood door comes only in the two larger sizes of 32 wide and 36 wide, though sizes are 80 tall.
All of the wood doors offered by
Columbia come in specific sizes, most often the three standard sizes of 30, 32 and 36 inches. In a few cases only specific sizes are available. These doors come without hardware, but this allows the doors to be nonhanded. When a customer purchases their door, they can decide the type of hardware to use as well as the side of the door. They can then make the door open to the right or the left depending on their own needs.
