Wood Security Doors 2

Wood security doors and screen doors are catching on with homeowners that don’t necessarily want a typical metal security door. These old fashioned doors often look heavier, while the wood versions look lighter, friendlier and more welcoming. Many of the wood security doors available today were created from the Columbia Manufacturing Corporation.

The T-Bar is one of the more basic designed wood security doors from Columbia. The door comes complete with a detachable metal screen for those who want to change the screen out for something stronger. The outside of the door contains a one inch wide border surrounding all side including the top and bottom. Across the middle sits a small piece of wood with a second piece directly beneath it. This lower piece is intersected with another one inch piece of wood to create an odd design. The door is only available as an unfinished design, meaning the customer will need to stain or paint and seal the door themselves. It’s available in three sizes: 30”, 32” and 36” with all doors measuring 80” tall.

The Four Square wood security door takes the basic premise of the T-Bar and expands on it to create a more visual appealing design. The door comes unfinished and untreated in its bare wood state and stands 80” tall. It also comes in the three standard sizes: 30”, 32” and 36”. A wood polymer blend was used in the construction to create a durable door that can withstand a lot of pressure. Three pieces of one inch wood planks are arranged at the bottom of the door to create a pattern of four blocks or squares. All of these pieces are treated with their special adhesive blend to keep the pieces in place.

Some would assume that a wood security door named the Santa Fe would have a southwestern theme or look slightly fancy. This door from Columbia though is quite basic and plain, without a lot of decoration. The only decoration this wood door actually has is two wood tubes of half-inch diameter. These tubes are spaced twelve inches from the bottom of the door and twenty four inches from the bottom. The rest of the door consists of only a plain one inch wood frame.

To create this door the company has combined two types of wood to create a stronger and more durable door, capable of handling pressure from children and large families. Columbia has also included an optional wire screen that can be added to the back of the door to protect homeowners and increase security. The Santa Fe measures 80” high and comes in three sizes: 30 inches, 32 inches and 36 inches. This door is natural or untreated when shipped to shoppers, which means they need to apply a coat of paint, stain or sealant to protect the door before it can be hung.

Named after a classy town in North Carolina where the main attraction is the Biltmore Estate comes the Ashville wood security door. Five half-inch pieces of wood are drilled into the bottom edge of the door as well as a decorative piece on the middle. All the pieces are specially treated with a wood glue that’s resistant to water and moisture. The piece in the middle is made bigger and thicker than it normally would to hold up to pressure from frequent pushing on the door.

With this push bar in place, homeowners can even forgo the additional hardware. It comes with an insert that can be added to the back of the door. This metal screen turns the wood security door into a screen door when the owner needs that. Unlike other wood doors from Columbia, the Ashville is only available in two sizes, the 32” by 80” size and the 36” by 80” size.

Those looking for something a little more classic for an older home or one that looks older should pay attention to the wood security door known as the Spindle. Across the middle of the door sits a one inch piece of wood and another piece sits below that one a few inches. In between these pieces are tiny scrolled pieces of wood that have been turned to mimic the look of wood spindles found on a stairway.

Below that are two additional pieces of wood used to provide some additional stability. This untreated door needs to be stained and painted or sealed to protect it against moisture. Columbia makes the Spindle in three sizes, though they each measure 80” tall, they come in 30”, 32” and 36” wide.

Wood security doors from Columbia Manufacturing Corporation are available from the company’s website as well as many home improvement stores. There are other companies currently making wood security doors, but this article focuses only on the ones available from Columbia.
